Fire Emergency Evacuation Plan

What should you do when there is a unit fire, building fire, or fire drill at Atkinson Heights?

If a Building fire alarm sounds, you are required to evacuate the building immediately and follow the egress protocol listed below and proceed to the suggested Evacuation location. You will be notified of the Building alarm by the hallway alarms going off as well as the audible alarm horn on the wall in your bedrooms.

If there is a planned fire alarm test, you will receive advanced notice with specific dates and timeframes through your email on file as well as the resident portal. Unless the notice indicates otherwise, you do not need to evacuate the building during the test unless you are instructed to do so by Police or Fire Dept personnel.

If a non-emergency alarm sounds in your unit, i.e., smoke alarm from smoke coming from the stove, DO NOT open your unit entry door to the hallway, unless directed by Police or Fire Dept personnel to evacuate the building. Open a window and air out your space until the smoke has cleared and the unit alarm deactivates. If your unit alarm triggers the Building alarm you will need to evacuate the building.

In the case of a fire emergency in your unit, immediately evacuate the building and close your unit door behind you. Please find and activate the nearest fire alarm pull station to trigger the Building alarm, which are located at each stairway door and should be easily accessible as you evacuate. Proceed to the Evacuation Location outside the building and await further direction from the Fire Department. Please note, there are (2) Fire Extinguishers located on each floor, one is located outside the elevator and another outside Stair B.

Evacuation Location: Once you have exited the building, make your way to the furthest point of the parking lot. Do not go to your car in the parking garage. Do not reenter the building until the Fire Dept has advised that it is safe to do so.

Emergency Egress from units:

  • Stairs are located on either end of the hallway. One by the elevator and one by the far end units
  • Take stairs only, do not take Elevator in case of Fire
  • If you are in the elevator when the alarm sounds, the elevator will automatically travel to the 1st floor, unless the alarm originated on the 1st Then the elevator will open on the garage level.
  • If you are unable to evacuate on your own, please notify the fire dept in advance that in the event of an emergency you will need assistance to evacuate. Atkinson Fire Department 603-362-5611.
